Arkansas Valley Electric and Wave Rural Connect #StudentAthletesOfTheWeek are Dover Pirates Avie Reams and Landon Canfield. Avie is a senior center for the Lady Pirates and has attended Dover School District for the majority of her school career.

“This year I definitely have become a lot better at my defense. Last year I was more offensive-minded and this year I have focused more on trying to stop the other girls from scoring.”

Avie explained that she is pleased with the Lady Pirates this season. “The scoring is pretty evenly distributed throughout the whole lineup. We are doing good at passing the ball, looking for people, and making assists. Overall, I’d say we are working well as a team. Dover is a really small town so everybody here knows each other. Which means we always have the support we need, and everyone wants to see us succeed.”

Avie’s hard work and determination have paid off in her senior year. She has recently been crowned homecoming queen, as well as signed with Ouachita Baptist University to play softball.

Landon is a junior point guard for the Senior High Pirates and has attended Dover his entire school career.

Landon had a discouraging start to his season. He had worked diligently through the summer and broke his foot one week prior to the start of the season.

He explained, “I had to adapt to that. It took me a while to get back into the swing of things. Our team has a rough start too but we are picking it up here at the end of the regular season and we have a good shot at winning district.”

Landon elaborated on how greatly influential his community has been on his upbringing and that “…it’s a great feeling to represent Dover and play with the kids I have lived my life growing up with.”
